Field note 010 · Branding

What a brand book is actually for

· 4 min read

The short answer

A brand book exists to let other people make correct decisions without you. It should cover the position, the voice with examples, the visual system with rules, and what the brand never does.

Most brand books are beautiful and useless. Eighty pages of mood, two pages of rules, nothing an intern could act on at four in the afternoon. The test of a brand book is simple: can someone who has never met you make a decision with it and get it right.

What has to be in it

  • 01The position, in one sentence, with the claims you are refusing.
  • 02Voice with before-and-after examples, not adjectives.
  • 03Logo, type, and color rules with the failure cases shown, not just the ideal ones.
  • 04Templates for the five things you make every week.
  • 05A short list of what the brand never does.

Write the rules where the work happens

field notes newsletter

Two notes a month on building a brand nobody confuses with anyone else.

A guideline that lives only in a PDF gets ignored. Put the type scale in the design file, the voice rules in the content brief, the color tokens in the codebase. Governance beats inspiration.

A brand book is not a trophy. It is a decision-making tool that protects the work after the excitement wears off.

Want this handled for you?

This is branding work. Positioning, identity, and language built in isolation from your category, so your brand stops competing on price and starts being chosen on purpose.
