Field note 009 · Miami

Miami brands, stop selling the weather

· 4 min read

The short answer

Palms, sunsets, and neon are category cues every Miami brand already uses, so they cannot differentiate. Brands that travel borrow the city attitude, pace, and mix of cultures instead of its stock imagery.

We are based here, we love it here, and we will still say it: palm trees, pink sunsets, and neon script are the most crowded shelf in South Florida. Using them does not make a brand feel like Miami. It makes it feel like every other brand that also decided Miami was a color palette.

What is actually distinctive about this city

  • 01Speed. Things open, fill, and change faster here than the marketing can keep up with.
  • 02Mix. Three languages in one room and nobody translating. Brands built for that feel bigger than the zip code.
  • 03Confidence. Understatement is not the local dialect. Say the thing.
  • 04Proximity to the Caribbean and Latin America, which turns a local launch into a regional one.

Borrow the attitude, not the postcard

field notes newsletter

Two notes a month on building a brand nobody confuses with anyone else.

The brands from here that travel well are the ones that feel like the city behavior rather than its scenery. That is a voice decision and a casting decision long before it is a color decision.

Sell the city nerve. Anyone can buy a stock photo of the water.

This is branding work. Positioning, identity, and language built in isolation from your category, so your brand stops competing on price and starts being chosen on purpose.
