Field note 013 · Hospitality

The pool shot problem

· 4 min read

The short answer

Hospitality feeds look identical because most properties photograph the asset instead of the experience. The brands that win direct bookings shoot from the guest point of view and give the feed a narrator.

Scroll any hospitality account in Miami and you will see the same five frames. Empty pool at golden hour. Towel folded like origami. Cocktail on a ledge. Drone pull-back. Lobby with nobody in it. Beautiful, expensive, and interchangeable.

The problem is the point of view, not the camera

Property photography exists to prove the asset is real. Brand content exists to make someone want to be in it. Those are different jobs. When you shoot the room instead of the moment in the room, the audience has nothing to project themselves into, so the only remaining variable is price. That is how properties end up renting their own guests back from an online travel agency.

What the direct-booking properties do differently

  • 01They cast. Real people in frame, doing something specific, at a time of day with a mood.
  • 02They repeat a signature. One recurring ritual, dish, sound, or corner that becomes shorthand for the place.
  • 03They publish a voice. Captions that sound like a person who works there, not a press release.
  • 04They shoot on a cadence. Monthly capture beats an annual mega-shoot that ages out in six weeks.

A simple test before your next shoot

Cover the logo and the geotag. If a guest could not tell your property from three competitors, the shot list is the problem. Rebuild it around four or five moments only you can offer, then let the asset appear in the background where it belongs.

Direct bookings follow desire, and desire needs a point of view.
